Gamberale is a county with about 500 inhabitants, at 1350 meters above the sea level. It stands on the rocky mountain of Sant'Antonio, at the left of the river Sangro, in a enchanting natural scenery. The village, of late medieval origin, was mentioned for the first time in the XII century. Around the half of '400 was feud of Raimondo de Anichino, whose family kept the domain for the following century when it was bought by the Crispano's. In the XVIII century was ruled by the Mascitelli of Atessa, until the end of feudalism. The history of Gamberale left important evidence for us to enjoy:
San Lorenzo's Church : probably dated at the beginning of the XVIII century, even though the counter-forts on the side towards downhill are dated to a late period than the main structure.
Sant'Antonio's Church : built after world war II, is located in a fraction of the Piano d'Ischia county.
The Castle : with a Medieval layout, set on a far more ancient religious structure. As stated on the inscription on the main façade, the structure has been restored in 1881 thank to a certain Pasquale Bucci. Its dungeons really worth a visit.
'Casa Pollice' (Pollice House): based in San Lorenzo's square at the entrance of the city. It has a rather interesting portal made of manufactured, calcareous stone, insert between two counter-forts in the central bay of the façade. The richness of the site where Gamberale is located gives a chance to enjoy its beauty in every season.
